![]() About Utah Also called the Beehive State, Utah got its name from the Ute tribe, meaning “people of the mountains”. The region was first explored for Spain by Franciscan friars Escalante and Dominguez in 1776. In 1824 the famous American frontiersman Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake. Escaping from religious persecution the Mormons arrived in 1847 and began to build Salt Lake City. The U.S. acquired the Utah region in the treaty ending the Mexican War in 1848. Today Utah's 82,000 square miles offer some breathtaking views and are resplendent with some of the most memorable natural flora and fauna. Understandably, Utah is divided in dozens of national, state and local parks. The skiing in Utah's Wasatch Mountains and the rafting in the alpine streams are famous tourist attractions which are known through out the world. Interestingly, most Utahans (that is what the local residents are called) belong to the Mormon Church. In compliance with the Mormon tradition, Utah families are large as well as traditional. But that does not make Utah against liberal and cosmopolitan standards of living. Utah is the most urban state in the West and Salt Lake City has evolved into a town fit to host the Olympics. The state is rich in natural resources and has long been a leading producer of copper, gold, silver, lead, zinc, and molybdenum. Oil has also become a major product. Utah has large deposits of low sulfur coal. The traditional industries of agriculture and mining are today combined with tourism and aerospace, biomedical, and computer-related businesses. Utah is a great vacationland with 11,000 mi of fishing streams and 147,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs.
