![]() About Nevada The driest state in the nation, with an average annual rainfall of only about 7 in., much of Nevada is uninhabited, sagebrush-covered desert. Trappers and traders entered the Nevada area in the 1820s. The U.S. obtained the region in 1848 following the Mexican War, and the first permanent settlement was a Mormon trading post near present-day Genoa. Recently Nevada's been coping with an influx of new residents where the population of this dry state has jumped more than 66%. Nevada achieved fame by the discovery of the Comstock Lode, the richest known U.S. silver deposit, in 1859, and its mines have produced large quantities of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, mercury, barite, and tungsten. Oil was discovered in 1954. Gold now far exceeds all other minerals in value of production. The other point of its gaining fame and name was in 1931, when the state monopolized two industries, divorce and gambling. For many years, Reno and Las Vegas were the “divorce capitals of the nation.” While more liberal divorce laws in other states have out shadowed Nevada, the state is still the gambling capital of the U.S. and a leading entertainment center. Gambling taxes account for 34.1% of the State’s general tax revenues. Understandably, Nevada manufactures gaming equipment; other industries include lawn and garden irrigation devices; titanium products; seismic and machinery monitoring devices; and specialty printing. Come to think of it, newcomers are still drawn to Nevada for the same reasons they were in 1859, when miners struck silver in Virginia City: the attraction of easy money and better quality of life. While in Nevada, keep in mind the following information: • Motto: All for Our Country • Nicknames: Sagebrush State; Silver State; Battle Born State • Origin of name: Spanish: “snowcapped” • Nevada's state capital is Carson City. • Nevada has roughly one slot machine for every ten residents. • Though summer highs can easily pass 100°, Nevada means "snow clad" in Spanish. • Because Nevada entered the Union during the Civil War, its state flag features the phrase "battle born," though there were no battles which took place in the state. • In Eureka, Nevada it's illegal for men with moustaches to kiss women.
