![]() About Hawaii Stretching over an ocean expanse of 1,600 miles, almost 2,500 miles west of California, lies Diamond Head, the peak on the beaches of Oahu that most surfers and tourists use as a starting point when discovering Hawaii, one of world’s most coveted tourist destinations. Thousands throng to these 8 islands for the pleasures of relaxing on the Hawaiian beach or hiking through Hawaii’s many rainforests or to watch the incredible steaming lava still trickling down the sides of Kilauea, one of world’s largest and most active volcanos. First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600, Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British captain James Cook, who named the group the Sandwich Islands. Its beaches are legendary – sometimes sparkling white and sometimes black, grey, brown, red and green sand. Hawaii was a native kingdom throughout most of the 19th century. Following annexation in 1898, Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900. The eight main islands are Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Hawaii's state capital and largest city is Honolulu. There is no clear majority of any particular ethnic or racial group in Hawaii. Native Hawaiians, of Polynesian descent, live in harmony with the European, Chinese, Japanese and Filipino settlers who've arrived over the years. A hybrid language, pidgin Hawaiian, is spoken by almost everyone in this State. Now that you're moving to Hawaii, here are some interesting facts worth remembering: • Tourism is Hawaii's largest industry, but the state also supplies one third the world's commercial pineapple stock and is the only place in America where coffee is grown on an industrial scale. • Hawaii state law makes it an offense to not own a boat. • The Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, was directly responsible for U.S. entry into World War II. • Hawaii's highest peak is Mauna Kea (13,796 ft). Mauna Loa (13,679 ft) is the largest volcanic mountain in the world by volume. • Nickname: Aloha State • Origin of name is uncertain. The islands may have been named by Hawaii Loa, their traditional discoverer. Or they may have been named after Hawaii or Hawaiki, the traditional home of the Polynesians
