About California One of the richest and diverse places on earth, there is no single community or race which can hold majority in this State. While it is said that California is a place made for, of and by dreamers, it is not just day dreaming which is going to work in this hard working state. The ‘dream’ accolade perhaps has its toot in 1849, when tens of thousands of Americans flocked to California with dreams of plucking gold from the hills. Today, new Californians are born with thousands thronging to Hollywood to strike it rich and help their dreams come true. "California Dreaming," was a famous song which topped the charts in the 1960s, when hippies defied standard authority and invented the term "alternative lifestyle" in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Although California was sighted by Spanish navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, its first Spanish mission (at San Diego) was not established until 1769. California became a U.S. territory in 1847 when Mexico surrendered it to John C. Frémont. The reason for California becoming one of the most populous states may be that more immigrants settle in California than any other state—more than one-third of the nation's total in 1994. Asians and Pacific Islanders have always led the influx.
Today, California is the State to relocate in. Its leading industries include agriculture, manufacturing (transportation equipment, machinery, and electronic equipment), biotechnology, aerospace-defense, and tourism. Principal natural resources include timber, petroleum, cement, and natural gas. For all practical purposes most Californians do not live under the shadow of Hollywood. Never a dull moment at California, you could spend quality time at a few of the most famous tourist sites of the world including: Yosemite National Park, Disneyland, Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sequoia National Park, San Simeon State Park, and Point Reyes National Seashore.
Here are some interesting trivia about California: • State Motto: Eureka (I have found it) referring to the state's early days as a Mecca for gold hunters. • Nickname: Golden State • Origin of name: From a book, Las Sergas de Esplandián, by Garcia Ordóñez de Montalvo, in 1500 • It is the most populous state in the Union. • The Hollywood Bowl, in Los Angeles, California is the largest outdoor amphitheater in the world. • Up to half a million earthquakes have been detected in California during a single year, but the vast majority is too small for people to feel.
